In Ajijic, the celebrations for Mother's Day include games & contests, such as moms wrangling heifers, during a popular family afternoon at the rodeo.

Mother’s Day in Mexico is celebrated on May 10 every year with family celebrations and public events.

The occasional mariachi and banda group walk through town in the morning, playing a few songs for hire at each stop, sometimes rousing Mom and the family to the front door in the pre-dawn hours. Flower sellers set up stalls outside their shops or in the plazas the night before and keep selling throughout the day.

A Vaquero Mother’s Day

More than 1,000 people show up to the Mother’s Day event in Ajijic’s lienzo charro for a fun-filled, family afternoon that includes moms wrestling heifers, competing in drinking games and dancing on a pole.

Cash and other prizes are given out, so the competition between moms during the heifer wrestling is real: the object is for a team to restrain the animal long enough to take off a bandanna that’s wrapped around its head.
